Summer Reading with Beanstack

Tiger, zebra, elephant, lemur, and toucan reading books around a banner that says Tails & Tales.

This project was brought to you by the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction and made possible in part by the Institute of Museum and Library Services grant LS-00-19-0050-19.

We are bringing our 2021 Summer Reading Program: Tails & Tales to you virtually with Beanstack! On Beanstack, you can log your reading and activities to earn badges and tickets for prize drawings! Summer Reading runs from June 14 until July 31, with a special Bonus Round in August.

Click here for a printable brochure.

How to get started:

  1. Download the Beanstack app or visit our website at
  2. Register readers. You can create an account for yourself and your child. You do not need to have an account for yourself if you are just signing up a child (but there are great prizes for you too!)

  3. Enroll each reader for the Summer Reading Program that corresponds with their age. There are summer reading challenges for all ages: children, teens, and adults!

  4. Log reading to earn badges and prize tickets for prizes. Complete activities and book reviews to earn bonus tickets and extra prize wheel spins.

Not interested in using Beanstack? No worries. We will continue to offer paper reading cards, like we have in years past. Just visit us at the library to get signed up!

Here's how Summer Reading works:

This year's theme, "Tails & Tales" is all about animals, but you can read any book you like! Audiobooks and graphic novels count!

Kids & Teens Challenge (Ages Birth-17) - Log the number of minutes you read! Every 120 minutes of reading earns you a badge and a ticket to enter for a prize drawing.

Adult Challenge (Ages 18+) - Log the number of books you complete! Every book you complete earns you a badge and a ticket to enter for a prize drawing.

Frequently Asked Questions:

Q: Do children/teens still earn a free book upon registration for the Summer Reading Program, like in years past?
A: Yes! Visit the library to show us your Beanstack challenge registration badge and select your free book. If you are not using Beanstack, once you return your first reading card, you can select your free book.

Q: How do I earn prize tickets and where do I enter for a prize?
A: Read! Log your minutes (children and teens) or completed books (adults), and earn badges. Certain badges will award virtual tickets. Then you choose to enter your tickets into a  virtual prize "bucket." Prizes are the same for both virtual and paper programs. The last day to submit your tickets is July 31st.

Q: What is an activity and what do I get for doing one?
A: An activity is a bonus fun chance for you to earn something special! They will consist of things like read a book outside, write a book review, draw your favorite book character, and more. Once you mark an activity as complete, you will automatically earn a reward through the Beanstack website/app.

Q: What if I don’t have access to a smart phone or computer?
A: There are two options: visit the library and use one of our computers to enter your information. Or pick up paper logs for your books, minutes, and activities.

Q: Will there be a prize wheel this year?
A: Yes – the wheel will be out on Wednesdays and Thursdays.

Q: If I have more questions or need help with my Beanstack  account, who do I ask?
A: Send an email to, reach out through our Facebook page, or stop in to ask a staff member for further assistance.
