Wish Master, by Betty Ren Wright (Junior)

Corby feels isolated at his grandfather’s house during summer vacation. He feels that his grandfather is always comparing him to his father and that Corby doesn’t measure up. When his new friend Buck almost dares him to go up to the cliffs at night and ask for a wish from the Wish Master (a giant statute on the cliff) Corby goes along to prove his bravery. Although he does not believe in the Wish Master, Buck makes him wish for something. Corby starts to think there may be something to the Wish Master when his wish comes true. The two boys go back a second time and Corby wishes for what he really wants, and soon finds himself in the worst trouble of his life.
