Whirligig,
by Paul Fleischman (Young Adult)
Brent
Bishop wants to be part of the in-group in high school, but in chasing
this dream he makes a fatal mistake and kills someone with his car.
The mother of his victim issues part of his sentence. She decrees that
he must go on a cross-country journey building whirligigs as he goes.
The story alternates between his building of the whirligigs and the
discovery of them by others. His wind toys bring love to a Maine schoolgirl,
and understanding to a distraught Miami street sweeper. They transform
a hard driving parent in Washington and cheer a glum San Diego teenager.
Whirligig
reveals the myriad mysterious links created by our actions.
