Snow Spider, by Jenny Nimmo (Junior)

On Gwyn’s tenth birthday he discovers that he comes from a long line of magicians. This news is not particularly welcome since he has to contend with a grandmother who is a little off center, an nervous mother, and a father who blames him for his sister’s disappearance. His gifts from his grandmother on this day are a brooch, a piece of dried seaweed, a scarf that looks very much like his sister's, a tin whistle, and a broken horse with a warning tag that says NOT THIS. When he takes the brooch out to the hills on a very windy night, and hold the brooch out to the wind, the brooch is taken away and in its place he find a spectacular snowflake. that moves and turns into a beautiful silver spider. This is the first of the magical things that happen with his gifts as he searches to find the answer to his sister’s disappearance.
