Night
Hoops, by Carl Deuker (Young Adult)
Basketball
is a major part of the lives of Nick and Scott Abbott, Nick because
he loves it and Scott because his father has dreams of him becoming
a major basketball player. Nick practices basketball for hours without
encouragement. Scott practices as well, but he practices the trumpet.
The inevitable blowup comes when Scott defies his father opts for music.
All the attention that was previously given to Scott now comes Nick’s
way.
Nick’s
neighbor, the neighborhood bully, Trent Dawson, is also a basketball
fanatic. When Nick’s father puts in a court in the back yard,
Trent is given permission to shoot hoops when Nick and Scott are not
using it. So it is that every night Nick hears the thump thump of Trent
shooting “night hoops”. When they both make the high school
team their lives become intertwined. The story is the story of the season
and of loyalty and friendship and the costs of both.
