In the House of the Queen's Beasts, by Jean Thesman (Junior/Young Adult)

Emily Shepherd is delighted with her new home, especially the tree house in the back yard. She meets her first friend and neighbor there, Rowan. Rowan has been slipping through the wall between their two houses and finding a refuge in the quiet tree house. Here she is free to carve her animals, the “Queen’s Beasts”, that she had seen on her visit to her grandmother’s in England. It is soon clear that Rowan needs this refuge to escape her father who is at the very least unfriendly and very strict. There is something wrong at Rowan's house and Emily has to find a way to help her friend.
