Francie,
by Karen English (Junior)
All that Francie
Weaver thinks about is how to get out of Noble, Alabama. Her father,
a Pullman porter on a train line has already moved to Chicago and has
promised to send for his family as soon as he can. Francie hopes with
every letter that the time to move is now.
In the mean
time Francie goes to school where she meets a young boy, Jesse, who
she teaches to read. She also helps her mother as she cleans houses
for the wealthier white community in her town. Francie has to contend
with the double standard that exists for black people in the segregated
South of that time. When Jesse gets into trouble Francie becomes his
protector. In doing so she puts her family and her neighborhood in danger
of reprisals from those who are searching for Jesse.
This book
gives an accurate picture of the various people who lived in Francie’s
time, and also spins a good story of friendship and loyalty in young
people.
