Fever 1793, by Laurie Halse Anderson (Young Adult)

Mattie Cook is ambitious and has plans to turn her mother’s coffeehouse into the finest in the new United States. What she doesn’t count on is the outbreak of a deadly influenza epidemic in 1793. As the fever spreads from the docks to the town, fewer and fewer people venture out into the streets. Mattie’s mother fears for her safety and sends her to the country with her grandfather. When they are upset by robbers Mattie must call on all her strength to survive.

Student rating: This was great book. It showed the dreams and worries of a teenager two hundred years ago, and of a terrible experience that I hope I never have to face.
