The Dog With the Golden Eyes, by Francis Wilbur (Junior)

Cassie, like many other children, longs for a dog. Because of their limited space and money, Cassie’s mother refuses to get a dog. While her mother works at a local diner, Cassie does many of the household tasks, laundry and cooking the meals. One day a dog that looks like an Alaskan sled dog makes his way into Cassie’s yard. As Cassie slowly gains his trust, this dog with golden eyes becomes more and more important to her. Friends encourage her to try to find the dog’s owner, but Cassie doesn’t want anyone else to have her friend. When his food needs increase Cassie gets a secret job to pay for his food. As she tries to learn more about Toklata, as she names her friend, she discovers he may not be a dog at all, but an Arctic wolf.

This is a book for dog and animal lovers.
