Blackwater,
by Eve Bunting (Young Adult)
One
can lie by not telling the truth. One can also lie by not saying anything,
by accepting a lie that is spoken by someone else and saying nothing.
When Brodie Lynch is involved in a tragic accident, his cousin Alex,
who is a witness, tells a lie about their involvement. He says that
they were just “witnesses” and were not involved in the
drowning deaths of two of Brodie’s classmates. Brodie, by remaining
silent, makes Alex’s lie seem like the truth. Since they were
the only “witnesses”, who is there to accuse them of lying?
When the property of the classmates that Brodie had hidden turn up on
his doorstep along with notes referring to the accident, he knows there
was a witness to the accident and to the lies that have been told.
