Touching Spirit Bear, by Ben Mikaelsen (Young Adult)
Cole is a young man with a great deal of anger. Physical abuse from his father and his mother’s indifference and alcoholism turn him into a time bomb. Cole releases all of his anger on Peter and beats him senseless. Cole is arrested and must face a trial for his actions. When given the choice for disposition of his case by Circle Justice, he agrees to be banished to an island off the Alaska shore for one year. Used to wheedling his way out of everything, he plans to escape from his banishment. Unfortunately Cole does not allow for the weather, the tides, or the Spirit Bear.
