Plain
City, by Virginia Hamilton (Young Adult)
Bulaire Sims
is a going on thirteen version of her mother Bluezy Sims. Bluezy as
her name suggests is a blues singer of some reputation in the local
area and in not very reputable bars. Her father has been off the scene
for many years. If it wasn’t for Bulaire’s aunts and uncle,
she would have no one to look after her. Bulaire loves to watch her
mother’s act and on occasion she is taken to an early show, but
is whisked away by her uncle before things get too adult for Bulaire.
Bulaire is
determined to find out about her father and why he has disappeared for
so long. It is bad enough that society looks down on her and her family
because of where she lives, but when she finds out that everything she
has been told about her father is a lie, Bulaire sets out to find the
truth for herself.
