Mystery of Mr. Nice, by Bruce Hale (Junior)
The Chet Gecko books are written in the style of old detective movies like the Maltese Falcon. Chet Gecko is in Emerson Hicky Elementary School but he is also a budding artist and detective. When he gets into trouble for doing an unflattering cartoon of his teacher he is sent to the office. Instead of the punishment he expects, Principal Zero compliments him on his artwork and sends him back to class. Chet knows this is not how Principal Zero normally acts. Someone has replaced him with a copy! Chet sets out to find the answer to this mystery with the help of some of his classmates.
