Man
of the Family, by Kathleen Karr (Junior)
The year is
1924 and the setting is rural New Jersey. The Csere family, immigrants
from Hungary, struggle to keep out of debt and save for the necessities
on their farm. Everyone works the farm, but everyone also takes part
in the cultural heritage of the family. The eldest son, Istvan, learns
farming, and many life lessons at his father’s knee. He also is
required to practice the violin, an instrument that he is sure he can
never master as his father has. This tight-knit family meets all of
their obstacles together, but when tragedy strikes, Istvan must become
the Man of the Family sooner than anyone had ever imagined.
