Make
Lemonade, by Virginia Euwer Wolff (Young Adult)
LaVaughn’s
life is centered on one word, COLLEGE. It is everywhere in her house
almost like another person. Her mother has made it perfectly clear that
all of her effort should be directed toward this goal and anything that
distracts from the goal is to be eliminated. To this end, LaVaughn looks
for a part time job so that she can contribute to the fund her mother
has started for her education.
The first
job she tries for is babysitting for a girl only three years older than
herself who has two children. This family is the complete opposite of
hers. There is little to eat in the apartment. The children and the
apartment are filthy, and Jolly, the mother, has no skills to get a
good job. What starts as a typical teenage job becomes a mission to
help Jolly and her family. The only problem is that this takes time
from her own goal.
This book
is written in blank verse like “Out
of the Dust” by Hesse.
