I Was a Rat!, by Philip Pullman (Junior)

Did you ever wonder what happened to the other transformed objects at midnight when Cinderella was changed back to her dustbin self? Well the coach became a pumpkin, the horses became mice and the footmen and pages became rats. That is, they all did, except for one page who slipped off into the castle and was not transformed into a rat again. This young pageboy ends up on the doorstep of a cobbler and his kind wife who take him in. When asked his name, he responds, “I don’t know, I was a rat”. The cobbler and his wife decide to raise him as their own and name him Roger.

Unfortunately, Roger is separated from his good foster family and falls into unscrupulous hands where he is treated like a sideshow freak. Will Roger be reunited with the cobbler and his wife? What is Roger’s rlationship with the mysterious princess who is to marry the young prince? Buy the next edition of the Daily Scourge, or read “I Was a Rat!”.
