Hope
Was Here,
by Joan Bauer (Young Adult)
The food business is in Hope’s
blood. Her mother is an outstanding waitress even though her qualifications
as a mother are not as stellar. She has left Hope to be raised by her
Aunt Addie. Aunt Addie is a wizard of a cook.
As the story opens Addie’s
partner in a diner has defrauded Hope and Addie of their money. Hope
has to move, yet again. She leaves behind her signature, HOPE WAS HERE”,
on the sandwich board.
In this latest move they
head for Wisconsin and the Welcome Stairways Diner. Hope doesn’t
want to invest too much trust in this new place but she and her aunt
find the owner, G.T., a straight shooter who just draws you to him.
He has leukemia and needs Addie and Hope to help him with his already
popular diner. He instead is going to run for mayor against a truly
corrupt group of incumbents. Hope comes face to face with politics,
corruption, intimidation and love.
