Gathering Blue, by Lois Lowry (Young Adult)

Kira is afraid that now that her mother is dead and there is no one to care for her she will be dragged to the Field and be left there to die. She knows that because she has a crippled leg no one will take her in. When the most vicious of her neighbors appeals to the Guardians to strip her of her home and life, Kira prepares to fight for her life. She is surprised when the Council has plans for her to stitch the Speakers robe that tells of their history in pictures. The “blue” that Kira must gather is the knowledge of dying in the color blue, a talent forgotten to her people. In her quest to understand her art and in her quest to understand her art and her people Kira and her friends are lead to some uncomfortable truths.
