Dragon's Gate, by Laurence Yep (Young Adult)

Otter longs to join his father and Uncle Foxfire in America to work on the railroad. He sees how they are treated as kings on their home visits, and makes a wish to join them. When he is accosted by a drunken Manshu soldier, there is a struggle, the soldier falls on his knife and is killed. Otter gets his wish and is sent to California to escape execution. When he arrives, he soon finds that the streets are not paved with gold but with hard work. The status that his uncle and father enjoyed in China they do not have in the railroad camp. He feels tricked and betrayed by his father who made it seem like America was the solution to all problems. He vows not to be defeated by the railroad company and the mountain.
