A
Day No Pigs Would Die,
by Robert Newton Peck (Young Adult)
A young Vermont boy
is shunned or tormented by other children because of the smell of butchering
that lingers over his clothes. His father’s occupation of butchering
pigs is a trial to the young Robert. When his father is not able to
continue with his job, the butchering falls to Robert. He has to learn
at a young age that sometimes you’ve got to do “what’s
got to be done”. Sometimes what’s got to be done includes
his pet pig that can’t produce litters and as such is seen as
a pig slated for slaughter.
